It is argued that changes in the definitions & manifestations of masculinity in contemporary gender relations must be analyzed from a global perspective to understand transnational business & political relations. A survey of the management literature, business journalism, & corporate self-promotion materials reveals the perpetuation of a hegemonic form of masculinity in the current world order, called here a "transnational business masculinity," that continues to dominate international trade, investment, & communication relations. Contributions of this masculinity to global masculinity politics are described. The potential for small-scale movements at the national, regional, & local levels to create international linkages designed to analyze & challenge this masculine-dominated world order & implement a greater plurality of gender forms in business & politics is deemed promising. 20 References. Following an overview of the ways that masculinity has been defined across different time periods & cultures, problems with four main perspectives -- essentialist, positivist, normative, & semiotic -- are analyzed. An approach based on analysis of the way that gender is socially organized is advanced, & a three-part model of the structure of gender relations in terms of power, production, & cathexis is developed. The existence of multiple masculinities is described, & the practices & interpersonal relations that work to construct patterns of masculinity in the contemporary Western gender order are examined. 49 References. Recent social science research has made important changes in our understanding of masculinities and men's gender practices, emphasizing the plurality and hierarchy of masculinities, and their collective and dynamic character. These gains have been achieved mainly by close-focus research methods. But in a globalizing world, we must pay attention also to very large scale structures. An understanding of the world gender order is a necessary basis for thinking about men and masculinities globally. We can trace the emergence of globalizing masculinities at different stages of the history of the world gender order. Hegemony in the contemporary gender order is connected with patterns of trade, investment, and communication dominated by the North. A transnational business masculinity, institutionally based in multinational corporations and global finance markets, is arguably the emerging dominant form on a world scale.

Explores the theoretical bases for thinking about gender, sexuality, & the state & argues for a more generalized framework to examine the connection between gender relations & state dynamics. This approach recognizes the historicity of gender relation & emphasizes the state as process rather than as thing. The alternative theoretical framework espoused includes recognition of: gender dynamics as a major force in constructing the state; the "gender regime" of the state; & the state having a stake in influencing the historical process of gender order & doing so by exercising its power to regulate gender relations. However, new political possibilities for gender relations arise because the state is constantly in flux. 1 Figure, 125 References. M. Greenberg
